Is there any relationship between the study of theatre's architecture, its geographical location or its interior decoration and our better understanding of theatre as an art form? The purpose of this paper is to examine the various significations of the space where a performance is realized and then proceed to show how the semiotics of space can finally influence the relationship between text and performance, performance and specctator and theatre and the city itself. It is my contention that the history of theatre is not written irrespective of the environment that surrounds it. To have a better understanding of its development one should also have to look beyond the text itself in order to locate the various (extra) theatrical forces that have, one way or another, determined its historical course and its reception.
