Characterisation and treatment of leachates from the municipal sanitary landfill of Thessaloniki, Greece
The objectives of this work are to present a short review, regarding the amount and quality of leachates from the sanitary municipal landfill site of Thessaloniki in N. Greece, and to determine the optimum technologies for their efficient treatment, based on our recent research experience. The composition of landfill leachates presents a great variation depending upon several factors mainly from the type of disposed solid wastes, the climatic conditions and the age of the landfill. This variation significantly affects the applied treatment process. The composition of leachate from this landfill site presented a fluctuation between the high-strength acidic ‘young’ leachates, down to low-strength ‘old/aged’ or stabilised leachates with high nitrogen content(mainly in the form of ammonia). Efficient treatment of fresh leachates might be achieved by the application of biological methods, and especially by the use of the more flexible SBR system, while alternative process configurations, such as the moving-bed process using specific carriers, offered an increased removal rate of both organic matter and nitrogen content, exceeding 90 and 70%, respectively. However, biological methods were not equally efficient for the treatment of the stabilised leachates, containing mainly non-biodegradable compounds. In this case, physical–chemical methods, including coagulation and ozonation, were proved to be more efficient. Especially, the combination of coagulation/flocculation followed by ozonation proved to be an effective technique, resulting in low effluent COD values (less than 180 mg/L). This combined treatment method could be used either as a pre- or as a post-treatment process for the advanced (tertiary) treatment of fresh or stabilised leachates
