Η R είναι μια γλώσσα προγραμματισμού με ήδη ενσωματωμένο περιβάλλον για στατιστική ανάλυση και γραφική παράσταση της ανάλυσης αυτής. Είναι μια γλώσσα προγραμματισμού ανοιχτού κώδικα όπου την τελευταία δεκαετία γνωρίζει μεγάλη άνθιση, κυρίως στον τομέα της ανάλυσης δεδομένων.

Το περιεχόμενο της εργασίας ξεκινάει με την ιστορία της γλώσσας προγραμματισμού R, μέσω της οποίας φαίνεται η ιδιαίτερη σημασία αυτής. Συνεχίζοντας θα δούμε κάποιες κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες για το πώς μπορεί κάποιος να εγκαταστήσει και να κάνει χρήση το περιβάλλον της γλώσσας R στον προσωπικό του υπολογιστή.

Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο της εργασίας παρουσιάζονται οι βασικές λειτουργίες που χρειάζεται να γνωρίζει ο χρήστης για την σωστή αξιοποίηση της γλώσσας. Συγκεκριμένα αναλύονται από τις πιο απλές λειτουργίες όπως αριθμητικές πράξεις, έως και πιο σύνθετες όπως είναι οι βρόχοι. Στην συνέχεια γίνεται αναφορά για την περιγραφική στατιστική ποιοτικών και ποσοτικών μεταβλητών με χρήση παραδειγμάτων.

Σκοπός τις εργασίας αυτής είναι, όπως αναφέρθηκε παραπάνω, η δημιουργία της διαδικτυακής εφαρμογής. Έτσι λοιπόν στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο γίνεται γνωριμία με το πακέτο Shiny. Ακόμη γίνεται μια αναφορά σε κάποιες από τις λειτουργίες και τις εντολές που μπορούμε να  χρησιμοποιήσουμε.
