Ένας από τους πρωτοπόρους στον τομέα Ο Sir Francis Bacon, ομολογούσε πριν από 30 χρόνια ότι είναι καλύτερα να αποφεύγονται προβλέψεις σχετικά με την εξέλιξη των κελιών καυσίμου και οποιαδήποτε μελλοντική εκτίμηση θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί αργότερα βιαστική. Η συγκρατημένη αισιοδοξία του θα πρέπει να αποδοθεί σε δύο κυρίως λόγους:\n1/Η επιστήμη της ηλεκτροχημείας αναπτύχθηκε ουσιαστικά και με ραγδαίο ρυθμό τα τελευταία χρόνια, οπότε απαραίτητες έννοιες για την κατανόηση ηλεκτροδιακών και ηλεκτροχημικών φαινομένων που συνοδεύουν την λειτουργία ενός κελιού καυσίμου ήταν γενικώς δυσνόητες.\n2/H ανάπτυξη ηλεκτρολυτών και ηλεκτροδίων κατάλληλων για τις εξειδικευμένες και υψηλών απαιτήσεων χρήσεις και τους περιορισμούς που υπεισέρχονται στον σχεδιασμό ενός κελιού καυσίμου.",
