Κάτι τέτοιο παρατηρείται στα φυσικά στοιχεία που ανήκουν στην ομάδα των  ημιαγωγών  καθώς και στις τεχνητές ημιαγωγικές διατάξεις. Η πόλωση των ηλεκτρικών φορτίων μεταφράζεται ως δημιουργία διαφοράς δυναμικού μεταξύ των δημιουργούμενων πόλων, δηλαδή έχουμε μια υποτυπώδη ηλεκτρική γεννήτρια.Οι κύριες τεχνολογίες που χρησιμοποιούνται για την κατασκευή φ/β στοιχείων είναι η τεχνολογία παραγωγής ημιαγώγιμων υλικών με κρυσταλλική δομή, την πλειοψηφία των οποίων αποτελεί το πυρίτιο και η τεχνολογία λεπτών υμενίων (thin film), η οποία ονομάζεται έτσι επειδή το πάχος των στοιχείων είναι πολύ μικρό. Οι κρύσταλλοι και η μορφή λεπτού φιλμ διαφέρουν μεταξύ τους όσον αφορά την απόδοση απορρόφησης του φωτός ,την απόδοση μετατροπής της μια μορφής ενέργειας στην άλλη, την τεχνολογία κατασκευής και το κόστος κατασκευής.",
