Η Ελλάδα είναι μία πλούσια χώρα σε μάρμαρα και άλλα φυσικά διακοσμητικά πετρώματα. Η χρήση του μαρμάρου, στην εποχή μας έχει πάρει διαστάσεις βιομηχανικού προϊόντος,τόσο λόγω της «ανακάλυψης του» και χρησιμοποίησής του στις μεγάλες κατασκευές των τεχνολογικά και  οικονομικά αναπτυγμένων χωρών(Β.Αμερική-Δ. Ευρώπη-Ιαπωνία) \nΌσο και λόγω των συνεχών ανακαλύψεων «δυνατοτήτων του» και της χρησιμοποίησης του σε ειδικές χρήσεις\nΣτον Ελλαδικό χώρο παρουσιάζεται ένας πλούσιος ορυκτός πλούτος με μια ποικιλία ορυκτών, σε μικρές συγκριτικά με την σημερινή παγκόσμια παραγωγή ποσότητες με τρόπο ώστε να μην μπορεί να την επηρεάσει. Ο ορυκτός αυτός  πλούτος  στάθηκε ικανός, σε παλαιότερες εποχές, να προσδώσει στους κατοίκους της χώρας  οικονομική, στρατιωτική και πολιτιστική  δύναμη (εξορυκτική δραστηριότητα περιοχής Λαυρίου, Πεντελικού όρους ,κλπ) σε όλο τον τότε γνωστό κόσμο\n   Η σημερινή εξορυκτική δραστηριότητα παρουσιάζεται, σχετικά έντονη και μπορεί να διακριθεί σε τρεις γενικά κατηγορίες: \n1.Λατομική δραστηριότητα για παραγωγή ασβεστολιθικών υλικών (παραγωγή τσιμέντου, οικοδομική δραστηριότητα ,εκτέλεση δημοσίων και ιδιωτικών έργων)\n2.Λατομική δραστηριότητα για παραγωγή μαρμάρων (οικοδομική δραστηριότητα)\n3.Λατομική δραστηριότητα για τη εξαγωγή και εν μέρει αξιοποίηση ορυκτών πρώτων υλών (κυρίως βωξίτης, λιθάνθρακας, τύρφη, σιδηρομεταλλεύματα, λευκόλιθος).",
