Exploring gender differences in performance of high school students in the subject of Mathematics and their attitude towards this subject depending on their gender.

The present research investigates if there is a difference between male and female, with respect to the performance and the types of attitude the students may show towards the subject of mathematics. Additionally, it examines the correlation between performance and attitude. To this end, a survey was contacted where questionnaires were filled out by 106 pupils in 9th grade from a school in Thessaloniki. Performance was measured as per the grade (score) of pupils in the first semester in the course. To quantify attitude, special scales were used to measure interest, self-confidence and value. The results of the survey show a superiority of girls in both performance and interest in mathematics. Another finding is that performance shows a positive correlation with each of the examined types of attitude. The superiority shown by girls in mathematical performance and interest in this course contrasts with the results of other surveys, but the issue still lacks significant research in Greece. Longitudinal and more thorough research is needed to better draw safe and timeless conclusions about gender differences of students in this subject.
Η έρευνα επιχειρεί να απαντήσει στο ερώτημα αν παρουσιάζεται διαφορά, ανάμεσα στα δύο φύλα, στην επίδοση και στις στάσεις των μαθητών/τριων στο μάθημα των Μαθηματικών. Επίσης, εξετάζεται η συσχέτιση ανάμεσα στην επίδοση και στις στάσεις των μαθητών/τριων στο συγκεκριμένο μάθημα. Για το λόγο αυτό χορηγήθηκε ερωτηματολόγιο σε 106 μαθητές της Γ΄ τάξης Γυμνασίου στο Ν. Θεσσαλονίκης. Για να μετρηθεί η επίδοση επιλέχθηκε ο βαθμός των μαθητών/τριων στο μάθημα κατά το πρώτο τετράμηνο, ενώ για τις στάσεις χρησιμοποιήθηκαν κλίμακες που μετρούν το ενδιαφέρον, την αυτοπεποίθηση και την αξία. Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας δείχνουν την υπεροχή των κοριτσιών τόσο στην επίδοση όσο και στην κλίμακα του ενδιαφέροντος για τα Μαθηματικά. Ακόμα, η επίδοση εμφανίζει θετική συσχέτιση με κάθε μία από τις εξεταζόμενες στάσεις. Η υπεροχή που παρουσίασαν τα κορίτσια στη μαθηματική επίδοση και στο ενδιαφέρον για το μάθημα αυτό έρχεται σε αντίθεση με τα αποτελέσματα άλλων ερευνών, ωστόσο το θέμα οφείλει να διερευνηθεί περισσότερο στη χώρα μας, ώστε να προκύψουν ασφαλή και διαχρονικά συμπεράσματα για τις έμφυλες διαφορές των μαθητών/τριων στο συγκεκριμένο μάθημα.
