Louis (Χρήστος Λούης), ChristosΠαρουσιάζω εδώ ένα ιατρικό περιστατικό με σοβαρές βιοηθικές προεκτάσεις που συνέβη στην Αθήνα πριν από περίπου 90 έτη. Για να πιστοποιηθεί αν μία επιδημία αγνώστου αιτιολογίας λοιμώξεως στη Σύρο, μικρή σε εξάπλωση, ήταν Δάγκειος πυρετός ή λεπτοσπείρωση, ενέθηκαν (εμβολιάσθηκαν) από γιατρό του Ελληνικού Ινστιτούτου Παστέρ δείγματα ορού/αίματος από νοσήσαντες από την επιδημία σε τρεις έγκλειστους ψυχασθενείς. Τα αποτελέσματα του πειράματος αυτού οδήγησαν τον υπεύθυνο γιατρό στο συμπέρασμα ότι επρόκειτο όντως για επιδημία Δαγκείου. Ενώ όμως λίγο αργότερα το Παρισινό Ινστιτούτο Παστέρ έφθασε, μετά από πρόσθετες αναλύσεις, στο αντίθετο συμπέρασμα, το Υπουργείο Υγιεινής επέμεινε στην αρχική διάγνωση χωρίς να λάβει τα δέοντα μέτρα. Ευτυχώς η επιδημία στη Σύρο έληξε σύντομα, όπως και οι σχετικές συζητήσεις στους ιατρικούς κύκλους και, παρά το ότι οι ασθενείς δεν είχαν ενημερωθεί ποτέ για την διαδικασία την οποία υπέστησαν, τελικώς δεν υπήρξε νομική συνέχεια: μετά από την αρχική μήνυση κατά του γιατρού για απόπειρα φόνου ο μοναδικός νοσήσας από τις ενέσεις του μολυσμένου αίματος ασθενής αποθεραπεύθηκε χωρίς μακροχρόνιες επιπτώσεις.I present here a medical case with serious bioethical implications that took place in Athens approximately 90 years ago. To verify whether a small epidemic of an unknown infectious disease on the island of Syros was due to Dengue fever or to leptospirosis, a physician working at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute injected serum/blood taken from three epidemic victims into three institutionalized psychiatric patients without their or their legal guardians’ consent. The results of this experiment led the physician to the conclusion that the epidemic was indeed due to Dengue fever. Although a short while later, after additional investigations, the Pasteur Institute in Paris came to the opposite conclusion the Ministry of Health insisted on the original diagnosis and took no measures against leptospirosis. Fortunately the epidemic on Syros, as well as discussions in medical circles ceased soon thereafter.
