Σε πύργο του κάστρο του Πυθαγορείου της Σάμου βρίσκεται η επιγραφή της οποίας επιχειρείται νέα ανάγνωση. Η επιγραφή, δημοσιευμένη παλαιότερα, είχε διαβαστεί και σχετιστεί με τον αυτοκράτορα Νικηφόρο Φωκά και είχε χρονολογηθεί στο 969. Ωστόσο, σύμφωνα με την νέα πρόταση ανάγνωσης, η επιγραφή πιθανώς τοποθετείται στα 1089 και σχετίζεται με αυτοκρατορικές ιδιοκτησίες που ήδη διατηρούσε στην περιοχή του Αιγαιακού χώρου η μονή Μυρελαίου της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Η ανάγκη για κατακύρωση της ιδιοκτησίας του κάστρου έγινε με πρόβλεψη να αναχαιτιστούν οι επεκτατικές τάσεις που είχε επιδείξει η μονή της Πάτμου.

In a tower of the castle of Pythagoreion on Samos there is an inscription already read and published long ago, embedded in its masonry which is the subject of this article. In its first publication it had been related to the emperor Nikephoros Phokas, thus the proposed reading of the date was the year 969. However, according to another possible reading, which is being attempted here, the inscription most probably dates in 1089 and should be related to the imperial estates that belonged to the monastery of Myrelaion of Constantinople. The need to clarify the ownership of the castle could have been dictated by the expansionary attitude that the monastery of Patmos had exhibited towards public estates in certain Aegean islands that belonged to the same Constantinopolitan monastery.
