Η αναδίφηση των πληροφοριών που περιέχονται σε δύο χρυσόβουλλα, του βούλγαρου τσάρου Κωνσταντίνου Ασέν Τιχ (1257-1277) και του σέρβου κράλη Μιλούτιν (1299-1300) προς το μοναστήρι του Αγίου Γεωργίου του Γοργού κοντά στα Σκόπια, σε συνδυασμό με πρόσφατες εργασίες αποκατάστασης στον ναό του Αγίου Γεωργίου στην πόλη Kunstendil, ταυτίζουν τον τελευταίο με μετόχι της μονής που αναφέρεται στα ως άνω χρυσόβουλλα. Επιπρόσθετα, η θέση της μορφής του αγίου Νικολάου στον ΒΑ πεσσό, τυπική θέση για τον επώνυμο άγιο, λειτουργούν προς επίρρωση της παραπάνω άποψης. Τέλος, η υψηλή ποιότητα των τοιχογραφιών του δεύτερου στρώματος (αρχές 12ου αιώνα) μπορεί να συνδεθεί με την παραμονή του Αλεξίου Α΄Κομνηνού στη Θεσσαλονίκη (1105-1106) και τις πλούσιες χορηγίες του στις γύρω περιοχές.

The reevaluation of the information given in two chysobulls, of the Bulgarian tsar Constantine Asen Tich (1257-1277) and of the Serbian Kralj Milutin (1299-1300) concerning the monastery of St. George Gorgos near Skopje in combination to the recent restoration works at the church of St. George at Kunstendil identify the latter with the dependent of the monastery cited in the two aforementioned chrysobulls. Furthermore, the place of the portrait of St. Nicholas on the NE pillar of the church, a placement usually destined for the eponymous saint, works towards this assertion. Finally, the high quality of the second layer of the paintings, dated at the beginning of 12th century, can be related to the sojourn of the emperor Alexios I Komnenos in Thessaloniki (1105-1106) and his lavish donations to the neighbouring areas.
