We have measured the second hyperpolarizability, γ, of gaseous benzene at 514.5 nm with a cw Ar ion laser using the technique of electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation, under periodic phase-matching conditions and by mixing the benzene vapour with a host gas (Ar or CO2). The use of mixtures allows measurement of the hyperpolarizability of vapours of volatile liquids at room temperature and at frequency regions where the gas under study absorbs linearly at the second harmonic. Both real and imaginary parts of γ are measured. 1 Present address: Physics Department, University of Essex, Colchester CO4 3SQ, UK. 2 Present address: Physics Department, University of Kent at Canterbury, Canterbury CT2 7NZ, UK.
