      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nFew reports concerning the levels and the importance of\ninsulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF binding proteins\n(IGFBPs) in the serum of patients with inflammatory\nbowel disease (IBD) have been published.\nInsulin-like growth factor(IGF) system has properties that\nare potentially relevant to IBD. The IGF system is a system\ncomplex composed of IGF-I and IGF-II as well as at least\nsix different IGF binding proteins (IGFBP).IGF-I expression\nhas been shown in lymphocytes, macrophages and fibroblasts.\nIGF-I is a potent mitogen for fibroblasts and\nsmooth muscle cells and induces collagen synthesis in vitro,\nappearing to be important in tissue remodeling and repair.\nProinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-\n1) may play a role in IGF-I production linking the IGF system\nwith the inflammatory process in IBD patients. It has\nbeen suggested that IBD patients may have low IGF-I and\nIGFBP levels. In recent years the effect of regulatory peptides\nsuch as growth hormone (GH) and IGF-I in intestinal\ngrowth and repair has been emphasized. Trials of growth\nhormone in combination with a high-protein diet in short\nbowel syndrome patients as well as Crohn’s disease (CD)\npatients have been encouraging. It has been suggested that\nthe IGF and IGFBP system may be abnormal in IBD patients\nduring this chronic inflammatory process, yet there\nis no data is on the exact impact of inflammation on this\ndown-regulation and the interaction between the interleukins\nand the IGF and IGFBP system, in IBD patients.
