      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nCardiovascular involvement in inflammatory bowel disease\n(IBD) has been occasionally reported, mainly in the form\nof case reports. Endocardium derangement in IBD involves\nendocarditis and subendocardial abscess. Endocarditis may\noccur as a result of septicemia or due to the prolonged use\nof total parental nutrition (TPN) catheters or/and immunosuppression.\nThe cause of endocarditis may be bacterial\nor fungal and require surgery in several cases. Prophylaxis\nfor endocarditis in selected IBD patients is discussed. Myocarditis\nor perimyocarditis in IBD is reported as an autoimmune\nphenomenon during bowel disease excacerbations\nor as a side-effect of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA)\nformulations. Ulcerative colitis (UC) patients seem to be\nat a higher risk for this complication compared to Crohn�s\ndisease (CD) patients. Myocardial infarctions, selenium deficiency\nduring TPN, the role of prolonged steroid use and\nthe association with giant cell myocarditis are topics which\nneed further analysis. Pericardium involvement seems to\nbe the most frequent type of cardiovascular complication\nin IBD caused by drugs (5-ASA, azathioprine, cyclosporine),\npericardio-colonic fistulas or unknown causes (idiopathic)\nand it may occasionally be the disease presenting symptom.\nCoronary artery status and other factors for cardiovascular\nrisk, such as smoking, hyperlipidemia and exercise are\nalso discussed. Electrocardiogram and ultrasonographic\nchanges are not so uncommon and cardiogenic sudden death\nin IBD is reviewed. Intracavitary coagulation abnormalities,\namyloidosis, heart failure and aortitis syndrome are topics included and discussed in this review.
