"@value" : "SUMMARY\nBetween 1995-2001 79 patients with fecal incontinence (FI)\nwere examined with endorectal ultrasound in our laboratory.\nThere were 56 patients with a definite history of anatomic\nrisk factors (congenital diseases, anorectal operation,\ndifficult delivery, sexual abuse or other trauma). 11 patients\nhad evidence of internal or external rectal prolapse. Endoanal\nultrasound revealed sphincter defects in 50 patients\n(44 internal anal sphincter (IAS) defects and 38 external\nanal sphincter (EAS) defects). Sphincter defects were found\nin 47/56 patients with a history of anorectal trauma and in\n3/23 patients without a history of trauma. In 14 patients,\nno risk factor was identified. The etiology of FI was diagnosed\nas non-traumatic after endoanal ultrasound examination\nin 34 patients (6 patients with endosonographic evidence\nof sphincter trauma). The results of endorectal ultrasound\nhad a significant impact in the subsequent management\nof FI (sphincter repair, muscle transposition, biofeedback\ntraining or prolapse repair).\nKey words: Fecal incontinence, Anal sphincter, Anorectal\noperation, Diabetes, Pudendal neuropathy, Endoanal ultrasound,\nVector manometry, Congenital, Prolapse, Biofeedback,\nSphincter repair, Muscle transposition."
