      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nCrohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are common causes\nof gastrointestinal morbidity in the Western World. The\nexact aetiology is unknown, yet, it is generally accepted that\ndisease occurs as the consequence of dysregulated immune\nresponse to one or more exogenous factors in a genetically\npredisposed host. Epidemiological, family, association, and\nhuman genome screening studies have provided overwhelming\nevidence for a genetic susceptibility to IBD. These studies\nclearly indicate that IBD is not inherited as a simple\nMendelian disorder, but more likely as a complex genetic\ntrait, including gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.\nRecently, significant progress has been accomplished\nin understanding the immunological mechanisms that mediate\nchronic intestinal inflammation, as well as in identifying\nthe genetic abnormalities that underlie these pathologic\ninflammatory responses. In the current review, we will\nfocus on recent developments in unravelling the genetic\nbasis of IBD and we will discuss the potential clinical applications\nof these findings."
