      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nIn the United States alone, it is estimated that there will be\nover 138,000 new cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed and\nover 50,000 deaths in 2001. This represents the fourth most\ncommon malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer\ndeath. Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment for\nthis disease. However, it is limited by tumour stage, location\nand biological behavior. Although curable in its early\nstages, the ultimate overall survival is no better than 50%.\nThese numbers have remained relatively constant despite\nscreening and attempts at earlier diagnosis. Newer advances\nin surgical therapy have centered on the management of\nrectal carcinoma. Laparoscopic surgical techniques have\nbeen adapted to surgical resection of the colon, however for\nmalignant processes it still remains investigational."
