      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nCollagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis are two chronic\ninflammatory conditions, involving the large bowel. These\ntwo interesting entities, are usually referred to under the\ngeneral term microscopic colitis. Collagenous colitis is\ncharacterized by watery diarrhea, abdominal bloating and\nmild loss of weight. The true incidence is unknown. However,\nit has been estimated that it is unlikely to exceed one case\nper 100000 population. The etiology is unknown, although\nthe use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and\nlansoprazole, as well as infection by Yersinia enterocolitica\nhave been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease.\nThe role of activated eosinophils seems to be quite\nimportant. Diagnosis requires the histological detection of\na thick subepithelial collagen band on large bowel mucosa\nbiopsies. Treatment includes the administration of\nmesalamine, corticosteroids, budesonide, cholestyramine,\nas well as methotrexate, pendoxyphylline and octeotride.\nSurgery is reserved for severe cases. The course of the\ndisease seems to be quite benign. Although most patients\nrelapse after treatment cessation, most are asymptomatic\nfor a long period of time after the establishment of\ndiagnosis. Progression to ulcerative colitis occurs although\nin only a small percentage of patients. Fortunately no\nassociation with intestinal or extraintestinal cancers has\nbeen found.\nKey words: Collagenous colitis, Inflammatory bowel\ndisease, Microscopic colitis, Lymphocytic colitis"
