"@value" : "SUMMARY\nInflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) include a variety of\nintestinal disorders, widely distributed throughout the\nhuman population. In recent years Nitric Oxide (NO) has\nbeen shown to play a role in the pathophysiology of IBD\nboth in patients and in animal models. The aim of this study\nwas to examine the effect of L-arginine on the inflammatory\nresponse ischemic colitis in an experimental rat model. The\nanimals used in the experiment were male Wistar rats,\nweighing between 240g and 310g For the induction of\nischemic colitis, a solution of TNBS was instilled into the\nrectum. Blood samples were taken and the mice were\nsubjected to total colectomy. To assess the severity of colitis,\nhaematological, biochemical and histopathological criteria\nwere used. For the statistical analysis of the results obtained\nwe used Student’s t-test, or Welch test and Mann-Whitney\ntest. Statistical significance between the two groups was\nproved in complete blood count parameters: WBC, Hgb,\nMCV, MCH and in biochemical parameters: Gluc., SGOT,\nSGPT, CPK and especially MDA (Malonaldehyde), which\nis a critical parameter in experimental colitis. Histological\nexamination of the control group (No 1) revealed epithelial\nnecrosis, acute infiltration of the Lamina propria consisting\nof polymorphonuclear leukocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophiles\nand macrophages, submucosal edema and development\nof granulation and fibrous tissue of the muscular\nlayer. On the other hand in the L-Arginine group (No 2),\nthe alterations were less and not widespread in all areas as\nin the control group. Some samples were almost intact and\nothers revealed atrophy of mucosal surface of the gastrointestinal \nvillae and minimal inflammation of the lamina\npropria. We concluded that L-Arginine and nitric oxide\ninhibitors may have a role in the treatment of inflammatory\nbowel diseases in humans.\nKey words: inflammatory bowel disease, IBD, L-Arginine,\nischemic colitis, nitric oxide"
