      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nAs the AIDS epidemic continues to spread and involve all\nsegments of society, more and more internists and gastroenterologists\nare called upon to evaluate and treat patients\nwith disabling diarrhea, the most common clinical manifestation\nof AIDS. It is often asked: Does it make sense to\ninitiate an extensive workup if no specific etiologic agent is\nidentified in many patients? Should we look for organisms\nwhen there is no specific therapy for many of them? We\nwill try to answer both questions and outline a rational approach\nto the patient with AIDS-related diarrhea, on the\nbasis of “small-bowel” versus “large-bowel” diarrhea and\nseverity of symptoms. Isolation of one or more organisms\nis common if a proper search is conducted, and specific as\nwell as symptomatic therapy can have a significant impact\non the patient’s quality of life."
