      "@value" : "SUMMARY\nThe aminoacid L-Arginine being the sole donor of nitric\noxide synthesis in cases of intestinal ischemia, seems to\nplay a protective role during experimental acute colon\nischemia and reperfusion. We studied the effect of pretreatment\nwith the aminoacid L-arginine in 144 Wistar rats who\nwere subjected to experimental acute ischemic colitis\n(A.I.C.) and reperfusion of varying time periods (30, 60, 90\nminutes). L-arginine was studied in comparison with Molcydomine\nand Caseine, two substances used for intestinal\nprotection. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a reliable\nmarker which indicate the degree of tissue damage after\nischemia-reperfusion, were lower in the L-arginine\ngroup, while the same group presented the lower level of\nhistopathological damages. We conclude that pretreatment\nwith L-arginine in rats subjected to A.I.C. attenuates the\nhistopathophysiological damages.\nKey words: L-Arginine, Reperfusion injury, Intestinal\nischemia, Malondialdehyde, Experimental model."
