      "@language" : "en",
"@value" : "Metastases are the main cause of death for patients with\ncolorectal cancer and the liver is the primary host organ.\nHowever, macrometastases constitute the final step of a complicated\nand poorly-defined multistage process, named invasion-\nmetastasis cascade. Before they metastasise, malignant\ncells undergo partial or complete transformation and acquire\nnew properties. They present intensive growth, provoke neoangiogenesis,\ninvade the surrounding extracellular matrix,\ndetach from their primary site and intravasate. Some succeed\nin surviving in the systemic circulation, adhere to hepatic sinusoids\nand extravasate. Eventually, by evading the hepatic\nimmune system, few cancer cells colonise the liver and form\nmetastases. While a vast number of cells leave the primary\ntumour and intravasate, only a small minority reaches the\nliver blood network. Thus, the possibility of metastases formation\nis very low. The entrapment of colorectal cancer cells\nin the sinusoids and their interactions with the resident cells\nare considered very important initial steps in the liver invasion.\nSinusoidal endothelial cells, pit cells, stellate cells and\nKupffer cells all mediate the metastatic process in complex \nways, through a variety of biological compounds and intercellular actions. Current research aims to elucidate the role of these cells in colorectal cancer liver metastasis."
