Digital databases of museums’ collections and their protection under the Greek copyright law

Karavasili, Anastasia

This thesis examines issues concerning digital museums and copyright. Digital technology offers new means and possibilities to museums in order to fulfil their public mission. Nowadays, many museums have created their own electronic databases which include a rich content with digital data and digitised materials from their collections. This process provides advantages both for museums and the public but on the other hand, it raises various issues concerning mainly the copyright. Copyright can pose key challenges to the development of museums’ digital collections. Thus, this paper will investigate the copyright’s impact on digitisation and its influence in the operation of museums. It will focus on the case of Greece and therefore, the Greek copyright law will be analysed concerning the databases protection. The aim of this dissertation is a general description of digital museums to be given and the Greek legal framework related to their digital databases to be defined.
