Civic pluralism and intercultural transformative education: Rethinking the dichotomy “us” vs “others”

Το παρόν άρθρο επικεντρώνεται στις πολιτισμικές και εκπαιδευτικές παραδοχές που συμβάλλουν στη διαμόρφωση κοινωνιών συνοχής, συμπερίληψης και διαπολιτισμικής επίγνωσης/δράσης. Ιδιαίτερα θα αναλυθούν οι σύγχρονες όψεις της ετερότητας (το δίπολο «εμείς» και οι «άλλοι»), οι έννοιες «μετανάστης», «άλλος» και «ξένος», ο πολιτισμικός ρατσισμός και η πολυπολιτισμικότητα σε αντίστιξη προς το μοντέλο του πολιτειακού πλουραλισμού (Kalantzis & Cope, 2013). Τέλος επιχειρείται μια πρώτη σκιαγράφηση της συμβολής της μετασχηματιστικής διαπολιτισμικής εκπαίδευσης στη μόρφωση του σύγχρονου πολίτη.

This article focuses on the cultural and educational parameters that shape social cohesion through inclusiveness and intercultural learning, awareness and action. In doing so it utilizes the notion of civic pluralism (Kalantzis & Cope, 2013), as a diverse and inclusive milieu in which the modern aspects of otherness (the dichotomy "us" vs "others"), the terms 'immigrant', 'xenos', cultural racism, and multiculturalism are reshaped. Finally, this article attempts a preliminary account of the contribution of transformative intercultural education in the education of the modern citizen.
