Το συγκεκριμένο κεφάλαιο εισάγει τον αναγνώστη στο ατμοσφαιρικό περιβάλλον και παρουσιάζει τη σχέση της ατμόσφαιρας με τα υπόλοιπα στοιχεία του πλανήτη. Στην ιστορική αναδρομή αναφέρονται οι προσπάθειες μελέτης του καιρού και του κλίματος από την αρχαία Ελλάδα μέχρι σήμερα. Το υπόλοιπο κεφάλαιο αφιερώνεται στη σύσταση της ατμόσφαιρας και στην παρουσίαση των βασικών χαρακτηριστικών της.

This chapter introduces the reader to the atmospheric environment and presents the relationship of the atmosphere with the rest environmental systems of the planet. The historical review refers to the man attempts to study the weather and climate from ancient Greece to the present day. The rest of the chapter is devoted to the composition of the atmosphere and the presentation of its main characteristics.
