Το κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζει τον ρόλο του χρώματος στον θεωρητικό προβληματισμό που αναπτύχθηκε στον 19ο αιώνα ως προς την πολυχρωμία των έργων τέχνης και της αρχιτεκτονικής της κλασικής εποχής. Το χρώμα λειτούργησε ως μεταβατικό στάδιο για την κατανόηση της αρχιτεκτονικής ως ενός ενιαίου συνθετικού σχεδιαστικού έργου. Οι σύγχρονες έννοιες του στιλ, του εφαρμοσμένου σχεδιασμού και του μοντερνιστικού total design αναζητούν εδώ τις ρίζες τους στις έννοιες της πολυχρωμίας και του συνολικού έργου τέχνης όπως αναπτύχθηκαν στον 19ο αιώνα από αρχιτέκτονες και ακαδημαϊκούς του νεοκλασικισμού, και όπως τις προσέλαβαν οι πρώιμοι μοντερνιστές των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα. The chapter presents the consideration of colour in the theoretical architectural discourse of the 19th century on the polychromy of classical art and architecture. Colour played a pivotal role in understanding architecture as a holistic design composition. The contemporary architectural conceptions of style applied design, and the modernist “total design” are here examined as to their connection with the concepts of polychromy and the “total work of art” as exemplified by 19th-century architects and academics of the neoclassical discourse and as received by early 20th-century modernist architects.
