Different solvents were compared as organic media for conversion of lactate and ethanol into EL, catalyzed by Novozym 435. Chloroform and hexane were the most effective in low acid concentrations (0.01–0.1 M) exhibiting maximum EL yields of 88% and 75% respectively. The yield of EL improved as the solvent’s Log P increased up to a value of 2. Non-commercial immobilized biocatalysts consisting heterologous Rhizopous oryzae (rROL) and Candida rugosa (CRL) lipases immobilized on hydrophobic supports were compared to commercial biocatalysts clarifying that Novozym 435 and Lipozyme RM IM could be efficiently applied. Operational stability tests were conducted using Novozym 435, which retained higher activity in chloroform as compared to hexane. Although non-commercial biocatalysts were not competitive in esterification, they exhibited significant activity towards hydrolysis constituting a valuable alternative to higher-cost options.</dc:description><dc:format>pdf</dc:format><dc:identifier>496</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>503</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.biortech.2017.09.130</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>09608524</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14279/11014</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>Bioresource Technology, 2018, vol. 247, pp. 496-503</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>none</dc:rights><dc:rights>© Elsevier</dc:rights><dc:source>Bioresource Technology</dc:source><dc:source>Bioresource Technology, 2018, vol. 247, pp. 496-503</dc:source><dc:subject>Engineering and Technology</dc:subject><dc:subject rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1949252375'></dc:subject><dc:subject>Operational stability</dc:subject><dc:subject>Industrial Biotechnology</dc:subject><dc:subject>Ethyl lactate</dc:subject><dc:subject>Lipase</dc:subject><dc:subject>Novozym 435</dc:subject><dc:subject>Esterification</dc:subject><dc:title>Application of commercial and non-commercial immobilized lipases for biocatalytic production of ethyl lactate in organic solvents</dc:title><dc:type>article</dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Scientific-article'></dc:type><dcterms:created>2018-05-04T05:49:33Z</dcterms:created></edm:ProvidedCHO><skos:Concept rdf:about='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1949252375'><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='el'>Βιομηχανική Βιοτεχνολογία</skos:prefLabel><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='en'>Industrial Biotechnology</skos:prefLabel><skos:broader rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/73942790'></skos:broader><skos:narrower rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/786006816'></skos:narrower><skos:narrower rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/882044792'></skos:narrower><skos:narrower rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1465183072'></skos:narrower><skos:narrowMatch rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc/47132127'></skos:narrowMatch><skos:relatedMatch rdf:resource='http://vocabularies.unesco.org/thesaurus/concept619'></skos:relatedMatch><skos:relatedMatch rdf:resource='http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85014263'></skos:relatedMatch><skos:relatedMatch rdf:resource='http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85065899'></skos:relatedMatch><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/Frascati/Industrial-biotechnology'></skos:exactMatch><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc/1949252375'></skos:exactMatch><skos:note xml:lang='en'>Frascati 42</skos:note></skos:Concept><skos:Concept rdf:about='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Scientific-article'><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='el'>Επιστημονικό άρθρο</skos:prefLabel><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='en'>Scientific article</skos:prefLabel><skos:broader rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/arthro'></skos:broader></skos:Concept><ore:Aggregation rdf:about='https://www.openarchives.gr/aggregator-openarchives/edm/aggregation/provider/000029-20.500.14279_11014%231'><edm:aggregatedCHO rdf:resource='https://www.openarchives.gr/aggregator-openarchives/edm/ktisis/000029-20.500.14279_11014'></edm:aggregatedCHO><edm:dataProvider>Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου</edm:dataProvider><edm:isShownAt rdf:resource='https://ktisis.cut.ac.cy/handle/20.500.14279/11014'></edm:isShownAt><edm:provider>Greek Aggregator OpenArchives.gr | National Documentation Centre (EKT)</edm:provider><edm:rights>other</edm:rights></ore:Aggregation></rdf:RDF>
