Crop margins provide important refugees to natural enemies and may improve\n biological control within the crop. The current study aimed at evaluating the ecosystem\n service of predation in Mediterranean tomato crops. Evaluation of predation within and\n in the margins of tomato fields was carried out in Pafos and Limassol during two\n periods: the fall-winter and the spring crop using Ephestia kuehniella eggs as prey\n facsimiles. The facsimiles were placed within the tomato crop and on wild plants on\n field margins. A week later, predation was assessed by counting the number of missing\n eggs. Results showed that predation in the field margins was five times lower than\n predation within the tomato crop. Beat sampling identified Nesidiocoris tenuis as the\n only predator present on tomato plants, and only during the spring season.\n Diversification of tomato fields using native plant species may increase the ecosystem\n service of predation and reduce the need for chemical pesticide applications.", "Completed", "Οι φυσικοί εχθροί παρέχουν μια ανεκτίμητη υπηρεσία οικοσυστήματος και\n συντελούν στη διατήρηση των φυτοφάγων αρθροπόδων. Τα περιθώρια των\n καλλιεργειών είναι γνωστά για τη διατήρηση των φυσικών εχθρών και βελτιώνουν το\n βιολογικό έλεγχο εντός της καλλιέργειας. Η παρούσα μελέτη είχε σκοπό να\n αξιολογήσει την υπηρεσία οικοσυστήματος της θήρευσης σε καλλιέργειες τομάτας\n κατά τη πρώιμη περίοδο (φθινόπωρο- χειμώνα) και την όψιμη περίοδο φύτευσης\n (άνοιξη) στις επαρχίες Πάφου και Λεμεσού. Τοποθετήθηκαν αυγά Ephestia kuehniella\n ως θήραμα, σε παγίδες μέσα στις καλλιέργειες αλλά και στα περιθώρια τους. Τα\n αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι η θήρευση ήταν κατά πέντε φορές μεγαλύτερη στο\n περιθώριο της καλλιέργειας σε σύγκριση με το εσωτερικό της, τόσο κατά τη\n φθινοπωρινή-χειμερινή όσο και κατά την ανοιξιάτικη περίοδο. Δειγματοληψίες εντός\n των καλλιεργειών με τη μέθοδο beat sampling έδειξαν ότι το μόνο αρπακτικό έντομο\n που δραστηριοποιείται εντός της καλλιέργειας είναι το αρπακτικό Nesidiocoris teuis\n και μόνο κατά την ανοιξιάτικη περίοδο. Διαφοροποίηση του εσωτερικού των\n καλλιεργειών τομάτας με φύτευση άλλων ειδών φυτών μπορεί να αυξήσει την\n οικοσυστημική υπηρεσία της βιολογικής καταπολέμησης μειώνοντας την ανάγκη για\n ψεκασμούς με φυτοπροστατευτικές ουσίες" ],
