Loin de se contenter d'une simple fascination esthétique, Malraux voit dans cet art une métamorphose des formes grecques, transformées par l'influence bouddhique. Il y perçoit un espace de rencontre entre deux mondes, celui de la Grèce hellénistique et de l'Inde bouddhique, où l'art devient le reflet d'une libération spirituelle et d'un dialogue entre les cultures."
