Linear buckling analysis of a column-footing system resting on elastic soil (EN)

The elastic stability of an axially loaded column, fixed on a footing resting on elastic soil, has been studied. In the model considered, the soil has been replaced by a rotating spring of known stiffness, placed under the footing, and for the connection of the top of the column with the rest of the structure a rotational and a horizontal spring have been provided. The boundary conditions which follow the ordinary differential equation govering the lateral deflections of the column have been formulated, and the condition of the static instability has been derived. Based on this condition, a detailed parametric study of the buckling load was carried out, in which the stiffnesses of the springs and the height of the footing have been used as parameters. The results of this parametric study are presented in the form of families of curves. © 1991. (EN)
