An innovative rigorous analysis of tissue fluorescence is presented based on electromagnetic theory. Tissue fluorescence has been approached as an inelastic scattering phenomenon via the formulation of the polarization vector of the medium. The general method described has been applied to a tissue model, where tissue is represented as a single, homogeneous, infinitely thick, dielectric layer, under plane wave excitation. Experiments using tissue-phantoms have been performed in order to validate our fully evaluated theoretical results. (EN)
