In silico oncology simulation models may be used for evaluating and comparing different therapeutic schemes, while at the same time considering different values of critical parameters which present substantial inter-patient variability. As the number of the involved parameters characterizing both the complex tumour biosystem and possible treatment schemes increases, the resulting exponential increase in computational requirements makes the use of a grid environment for the execution of the simulations a particularly attractive solution. In this paper, a grid-enabled simulation environment for the execution of in silico oncology radiotherapy simulations on grid infrastructures is presented and implementation details are discussed. The environment provides a web portal as the end-user interface and contains advanced features that facilitate the execution of in silico oncology simulations in grid environments. Special consideration has been given during the development of the environment in order to simplify the maintenance and extension of the application, while additional services for Quality of Service provisioning have been applied. The simulation environment has been employed in order to perform several scenarios of glioblastoma multiforme radiotherapy simulations on the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) grid infrastructure. Indicative simulation results, as well as statistics regarding execution times on the grid, are presented. © The Author(s) 2010.</dc:description><dc:identifier>http://hdl.handle.net/123456789/21163</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>893</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>910</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>10.1177/0037549710375437</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>ISI:000295597400004</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>0037-5497</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>87</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>10</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher xml:lang='en'>SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD</dc:publisher><dc:source xml:lang='en'>Simulation</dc:source><dc:subject rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1817988741'></dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Exponential increase</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Parameters characterizing</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>In silico oncology</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid-enabled simulations</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Quality of service provisioning</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Quality of service</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>parameter sweep simulations</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid technologies</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Oncology</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Computational requirements</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Multiscales</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Experiments</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid infrastructures</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Virtual reality</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid computing</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Clinical trial</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Simulation model</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Medical applications</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Execution time</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>End-user interfaces</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid environments</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Circuit simulation</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Critical parameter</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Biocomplexity</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Radiotherapy</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Glioblastoma multiforme</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>virtual clinical trial</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Grid portals</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>grid portal</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Simulation environment</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Biological mechanisms</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>In-silico</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Bio systems</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Radiation oncology</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Web portal</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>User interfaces</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>e-Science</dc:subject><dc:subject xml:lang='en'>Attractive solutions</dc:subject><dc:title xml:lang='en'>Exploiting grid technologies for the simulation of clinical trials: The paradigm of in silico radiation oncology</dc:title><dc:type rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Journal-part'></dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Scientific-article'></dc:type><dc:type xml:lang='en'>journalArticle</dc:type><dcterms:created>2011</dcterms:created></edm:ProvidedCHO><skos:Concept rdf:about='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Journal-part'><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='el'>Δημοσίευση σε περιοδικό</skos:prefLabel><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='en'>Publication in journal</skos:prefLabel><skos:broader rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/openarchives-item-types/Issue-segment'></skos:broader></skos:Concept><skos:Concept rdf:about='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1817988741'><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='el'>Λογισμικό (software)</skos:prefLabel><skos:prefLabel xml:lang='en'>Software</skos:prefLabel><skos:broader rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc-classifier/1532468312'></skos:broader><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/EKT-voc/1817988741'></skos:exactMatch><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85029534'></skos:exactMatch><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://vocabularies.unesco.org/thesaurus/concept6081'></skos:exactMatch><skos:exactMatch rdf:resource='http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001417'></skos:exactMatch><skos:closeMatch rdf:resource='http://vocabularies.unesco.org/thesaurus/mt5.40'></skos:closeMatch><skos:closeMatch rdf:resource='http://semantics.gr/authorities/ekt-unesco/1693897658'></skos:closeMatch><skos:note xml:lang='en'>isi - Computer Science, Software Engineering includes resources that are concerned with the programs, routines, and symbolic languages that control the functioning of the hardware and direct its operation.
