Κριτικός Γραμματισμός και Λεξικογραφικός Λόγος (EL)

Νικολάου, Γεωργία

The aim of this paper is to explore the connection between critical literacy, i.e. the ability of the language user to interpret the ideological orientation of a text, and the lexicographic discourse, which is the kind of language used in monolingual dictionaries (mainly). In the first part of the article, I am going to give an overview of the Critical Discourse Analysis theory, and present the basic features and functions of the lexicographic discourse. In the second part, I am going to use specific examples from the two most widely used contemporary dictionaries of Modern Greek to show that dictionaries are educational texts with specific value systems and hidden ideologies (Chen 2017), which very often reproduce the social hierarchies imposed by certain social groups. My goal is to offer educators of the Greek language useful insight about the pedagofical value of dictionaries towards the developmemt of critical literacy in education.        (EL)
