      "@value" : "The objective of this dissertation was to improve wildfire behaviour prediction \nin Greece for supporting fire management (prevention and suppression) and for \nimproving fire fighter safety.\nA database of one hundred and ninety six fire behaviour data records was \ndeveloped from field observations and measurements made during the evolution of \na large number of wildfires in Greece, in eight fire seasons (2007-2014). This, \namong others, allowed comparison of observed versus predicted fire behavior, \nusing the BehavePlus and CFIS systems, evaluation of the predictions of three \nspatial wildfire spread simulation systems, namely FARSITE, G-FMIS and FLogA, \nagainst actual observations, development of empirical fire behavior prediction \nequations for specific fuel types, and identification of relative humidity \nconditions for the occurrence of spot fires. The results of the dissertation \nwere incorporated into a spreadsheet which can be used as a Decision Support \nSystem (DSS).\nAlso, the empirical capacity of firefighters, Forest Service employees and \nvolunteers, with varying firefighting involvement and experience, to assess \nexpected fire behaviour for a set of conditions was examined through a \nspecially designed questionnaire that was answered by 60 respondents. The \nanalysis showed that fire behaviour in fine fuels was seriously underestimated, \na case of eruptive fire behaviour associated with a box canyon was not \nrecognized and there were weaknesses on telling the difference between the \nbehaviour of a heading and a flanking fire. The results support the conclusion \nthat fire behaviour training is needed for filling the knowledge gaps which \nwere revealed.\nBased on the findings of the study, a table was assembled suggesting the \nwildfire behavior prediction method of choice for each fuel and fire type. A \nsecond table was also developed identifying the most appropriate prediction \nmethod for use by the authorities for fire prevention, suppression and training \npurposes. Limitations, weaknesses and strengths are also reported, and cases \nfor which there is no available wildfire behavior prediction method are \nidentified."

      "@value" : "Σκοπός της διατριβής ήταν η ανάπτυξη μεθόδων αξιόπιστης πρόβλεψης της \nσυμπεριφοράς των δασικών πυρκαγιών για την Ελλάδα, ώστε να υποστηριχθεί η λήψη \nαποφάσεων κατά τη διαχείρισή τους (την πρόληψη, τον προκατασταλτικό σχεδιασμό \nκαι την καταστολή) και να βελτιωθεί η ασφάλεια των δασοπυροσβεστών.\nΓια την επίτευξη του σκοπού απαιτήθηκε η συλλογή μετρήσεων πραγματικής \nσυμπεριφοράς δασικών πυρκαγιών στο πεδίο, κατά τη διάρκεια της εξάπλωσής τους, \nαπό το έτος 2007 έως και το 2014 και δημιουργήθηκε βάση δεδομένων με 196 \nπεριπτώσεις, που επέτρεψαν τον έλεγχο της αξιοπιστίας υφιστάμενων μοντέλων και \nσυστημάτων πρόβλεψης της συμπεριφοράς δασικών πυρκαγιών και τη δημιουργία \nεμπειρικών μοντέλων πρόβλεψης. Ακόμη, αξιολογήθηκε, με τη βοήθεια \nερωτηματολογίων, η δυνατότητα εμπειρικής εκτίμησης της συμπεριφοράς πυρκαγιάς \nαπό επαγγελματίες και εθελοντές δασοπυροσβέστες.\nΜετρήσεις πραγματικής συμπεριφοράς δασικών πυρκαγιών συγκρίθηκαν με τις \nπροβλέψεις των συστημάτων BehavePlus και CFIS, η συμπεριφορά τεκμηριωμένης \nπυρκαγιάς συγκρίθηκε με τα αποτελέσματα προσομοιώσεων που παρήχθησαν από τα \nσυστήμάτα FARSITE, G-FMIS και FLogA, Δημιουργήθηκαν εμπειρικές εξισώσεις \nπρόβλεψης της συμπεριφοράς πυρκαγιάς για συγκεκριμμένους δασικούς τύπους και \nσυσχετίστηκε η εμφάνιση και η κλιμάκωση της έντασης του φαινομένου της \nμετάδοσης των δασικών πυρκαγιών με καύτρες με τις τιμές της σχετικής υγρασίας \nτου αέρα.\nΤα αξιοποιήσιμα ευρήματα που προέκυψαν από την ανάλυση, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για τη \nδημιουργία λογιστικού φύλλου εργασίας το οποίο μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί ως \nΣύστημα Υποστήριξης Λήψης Αποφάσεων (DSS) κατά τη διαχείριση δασικών πυρκαγιών.\nΗ ανάλυση των απαντήσεων του ερωτηματολογίου, ανέδειξε την ανάγκη δημιουργίας \nκαι εφαρμογής κατάλληλα προσαρμοσμένων εκπαιδευτικών προγραμμάτων. Οι \nσυμμετέχοντες όλων των επιπέδων εμπειρίας υποεκτίμησαν σημαντικά τη συμπεριφορά \nτης φωτιάς στα φρύγανα και τα χόρτα που είναι λεπτά καύσιμα και δεν συγχωρούν \nλάθη, δεν μπόρεσαν να επισημάνουν τον κίνδυνο εκδήλωσης εκρηκτικής συμπεριφοράς \nτης φωτιάς σε μια περίπτωση κλειστού φαραγγιού και δεν διέκριναν την ειδοποιό \nδιαφορά μεταξύ της συμπεριφοράς της πυρκαγιάς στην πλευρά της, από τη \nσυμπεριφορά στην κεφαλή της.\nΤα κύρια αποτελέσματα και τα συμπεράσματα της διατριβής χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για τη \nδημιουργία πίνακα στον οποίον προτείνονται οι κατάλληλες μέθοδοι πρόβλεψης της \nσυμπεριφοράς των δασικών πυρκαγιών ανάλογα με τις εκάστοτε ανάγκες και \nεπισημαίνονται τα ερωτήματα ή/και οι περιορισμοί που συνοδεύουν την εφαρμογή \nτους. Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, ο πίνακας παραπέμπει στο DSS που δημιουργήθηκε. Σε \nδεύτερο πίνακα, παρουσιάζεται η δυνητική χρήση μεθόδων του πρώτου πίνακα κατά \nτη διαχείριση των δασικών πυρκαγιών (από το στάδιο της πρόληψης έως την \nαποκατάσταση) και για εκπαιδευτικούς σκοπούς, από το Πυροσβεστικό Σώμα, τη \nΔασική Υπηρεσία, τις υπηρεσίες Πολιτικής Προστασίας και τους πιστοποιημένους \nεθελοντές."
