Σαγώνας ΚωνσταντίνοςΒασικός στόχος της παρούσας διατριβής είναι η διερεύνηση της επίδρασης των πιέσεων φυσικής επιλογής στη φυσιολογία, οικολογία και γενικότερη βιολογία της σαύρας Lacerta trilineata. Για τη μελέτη αυτή εξετάσθηκαν κατά συγκριτικό τρόπο διάφοροι χαρακτήρες του είδους από διαφορετικά επίπεδα βιολογικής οργάνωσης, πραγματοποιώντας σύγκριση μεταξύ νησιωτικών και ηπειρωτικών πληθυσμών. Από την επίλυση της φυλογένεσης προέκυψε ότι το γένος Lacerta διαφοροποιήθηκε στον ελλαδικό χώρο τη Μέση Μειόκαινο. Ο κλάδος της L. trilineata συγκροτείται από έξι γενεαλογικές γραμμές, υποδηλώνοντας την ανάγκη συστηματικής αναθεώρησης του είδους. Αναφορικά με το θερμορρυθμιστικό πρότυπο που έχει υιοθετήσει η L. trilineata φαίνεται ότι ακολουθεί τη «μεταβαλλόμενη άποψη». Επιπλέον, βρέθηκε ότι η L. trilineata στα νησιά έχει μεταβάλλει τη δίαιτά της, υιοθετώντας μια λιγότερο εξειδικευμένη θηρευτική συμπεριφορά και καταναλώνοντας σημαντικές ποσότητες φυτικής ύλης. Έτσι, έχει διαφοροποιήσει το σχήμα της κεφαλής και τη δύναμη δήγματος, ενώ, παράλληλα, παρουσιάζει μια διαφορετική στρατηγική πέψης μέσω μια σειράς προσαρμογών που έχει αναπτύξει. Οι τελευταίες αφορούν την αύξηση του μήκους του γαστρεντερικού σωλήνα και τη ύπαρξη τυφλικών βαλβίδων στο έντερό της. Τέλος, αποδείχθηκε ότι η περιορισμένη διαθεσιμότητα τροφής, οι μειωμένες οικολογικές σχέσεις, καθώς και η ανάπτυξη γενετικών φραγμών, που χαρακτηρίζουν τα νησιά έχουν επηρεάσει τη γενετική ποικιλότητα του μείζονος συμπλέγματος ιστοσυμβατότητας και την ισχύ της κυτταρικής ανοσίας.The main aim of the present research was to investigate the effect of natural selection on the ecology, physiology and general biology of the lizard species Lacerta trilineata. To this aim, we examined morphological, functional and behavioral traits within a comparative phylogenetic framework of insular and mainland populations. The resolved phylogeny revealed that the first branch-off of the genus Lacerta occurred during the middle Miocene. The clade of L. trilineata existences of six distinct lineages, raising questions regarding its taxonomic status. Regarding the strategy of thermoregulation, the comparison between mainland and island populations supported the “labile view” on the evolution of thermal physiology for this species. In addition, we found that islanders have adopted a less specialized diet and consume significant amount of plant material. The underlying reasons of this dietary shift should be sought in the divergence of head shape and bite force and the different digestive strategy. Namely, islanders have increased the digestive tract length and the frequency of cecal valves in the hindgut.
