      "@value" : "The variety of effects of environmental enrichment (EE) on the brain, at the \ncellular, molecular, anatomical and behavioral level, suggest that EE \naccelerates the development and enhances the structural and functional \nplasticity of the brain and thus it has been proposed as a therapeutic \nintervention. Although brain structure, connectivity and function exhibit \nmarked sex differences in response to risk environmental factors (e.g. stress), \nlittle is known about sex differences in response to beneficial environmental \nparameters such as EE. \nThus, this study focuses on the investigation of the differential effect of EE \non cognitive, neurochemical and neuronal structure indices related to \nneuropsychiatric disorders, using male and female Wistar rats raised in \nstandard or enriched conditions.\nIn the novel object recognition test, rearing in an enriched environment \nincreased attention only in male rats, whereas the preference index for the \nnovel object was higher in animals of both sexes. Neurochemical analysis \nrevealed that EE females exhibited reduced glutamate levels in the hippocampus \nbut there was no influence in the prefontal cortex of male and female animals. \nThese findings were accompanied by alterations in cytoskeletal and synaptic \nproteins essential for neuronal and synaptic function detected by Western blot \nanalysis. EE exhibits sex-dependent effect with males exhibiting elevated \nlevels of NMDA receptor subunit 2B and phosphorylated Tau (PHF1) and females \nshowing an increase in PSD95 scaffold protein and p35/p25, the activator of \nkinase cdk5. These findings reveal a sex-differentiated profile in the \nbeneficial EE effects on hippocampus, which include enhancement of brain \nplasticity and cognition."

      "@value" : "Το εμπλουτισμένο περιβάλλον (ΕΠ) αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό παράγοντα για την \nλειτουργία του εγκεφάλου και κατ’ επέκταση για την πλαστικότητά του, καθώς έχει \nευεργετικές δράσεις στη νευρωνική δομή και λειτουργία του εγκεφάλου. Γνωρίζουμε \nότι διάφοροι επιβλαβείς παράγοντες όπως είναι για παράδειγμα το στρες \nεπηρεάζουν διαφορετικά τα αρσενικά και τα θηλυκά, αλλά δεν γνωρίζουμε πολλά \nπράγματα όσον αφορά τις διαφορές μεταξύ των δύο φύλων ως απάντηση στις \nευεργετικές περιβαλλοντικές παραμέτρους, όπως είναι το εμπλουτισμένο \nπεριβάλλον. Τα συμπεριφορικά τεστ που πραγματοποιήθηκαν ήταν η δοκιμασία \nανοιχτού πεδίου και η δοκιμασία αναγνώρισης νέου αντικειμένου. Ακολούθησαν \nέπειτα νευροχημικές αναλύσεις μέσω HPLC στον δεξιό ιππόκαμπο και προμετωπιαίο \nφλοιό για τον προσδιορισμό γλουταμικού οξέος, ενώ στον αριστερό ιππόκαμπο και \nπρομετωπιαίο φλοιό, ακολουθήθηκε μοριακή ανάλυση μέσω western blot για τον \nπροσδιορισμό κυτταροσκελετικών και άλλων συναπτικών πρωτεϊνών. Όσον αφορά στα \nαποτελέσματά μας παρατηρήσαμε ότι το ΕΠ δεν επιδρά στις επιδόσεις της \nδοκιμασίας ανοιχτού πεδίου. Ο εμπλουτισμός του περιβάλλοντος από τη γέννηση, \nαυξάνει τις γνωσιακές ικανότητες και στα αρσενικά και στα θηλυκά πειραματόζωα \nπου έχουν διαβιώσει σε εμπλουτισμένο περιβάλλον, ενώ αντιθέτως μειώνει τα \nεπίπεδα του γλουταμικού οξέος μόνο στον ιππόκαμπο των θηλυκών πειραματοζώων, \nσηματοδοτώντας με τον τρόπο αυτό πιθανώς την έναρξη ενός μηχανισμού που \nστοχεύει στην αύξηση των συναπτικών πρωτεϊνών  και των συνάψεων. Τέλος το ΕΠ \nεπιφέρει αλλαγές σε κυτταροσκελετικές και συναπτικές πρωτεΐνες στον ιππόκαμπο \nμε φυλο-εξαρτώμενο τρόπο. Αυξάνει τα επίπεδα του NR2B και της PHF1 στον \nιππόκαμπο των αρσενικών, ενώ αντιθέτως προκαλεί αύξηση της PSD95 και του p35 \nστον ιππόκαμπο των θηλυκών. Καμία μεταβολή δεν παρατηρήθηκε στον προμετωπιαίο \nφλοιό."
