Παρατήνει την παραμονή στο νοσοκομείο κατά 2-3 ημέρες ή και περισσότερο και σχετίζεται με θνητότητα στις 30 ημέρες που μπορεί να φτάσει το 10%. Συνήθως εμφανίζεται κατά τη 2η- 5η μετεγχειρητική ημέρα. Η επίπτωση του στο γενικό πληθυσμό εκτιμάται στο 2-3%, αλλά μπορεί να φτάσει μέχρι και 70% σε ασθενείς υψηλού κινδύνου. Its incidence in the general surgical population is reported to be 2-3%, but it could get up to 50-70% in high-risk patients.
