THIS THESIS IS CONCERNED WITH THE USE AND FURTHER EXPLOITATION OF NOVEL GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES IN THE STUDY OF CATALYSIS, DEALING WITH SOME EXPERIMENTAL AND MATHEMATICAL MODELLING ASPECTS OF THEIR ALIGNMENT. AN APPARATUS, WHICH IS CONSTRUCTED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS, AND ENABLES SAMPLE VACANCY CHROMATOGRAPHY TO BE USED AS A COMPLETE AND FLEXIBLE ROUTINE METHOD, IS DESCRIBED. A SIMPLE DEVICE GENERATES CONTINUOUS STREAMS OF NITROGEN AND ORGANIC LIQUID REACTANT (HYDROCARBONS, CHLOROALKANES, ALCOHOLS) AT SOME STEADY CONCENTRATION. CONVERSIONS DOWN TO 2% CAN BE MEASURED. THE CONCENTRATION LEVEL IS CONTINUOUSLY MONITORED, THROUGH A SEPARATE LINE; THUS ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED CAN BE UNDISPUTABLY ASCRIBED TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE CATALYTIC SYSTEM UNDER INVESTIGATION. THIS LINE CAN BE ADDITIONALLY USED AS A SECOND SAMPLE VACANCY UNIT, AND THUS, IF REQUIRED, DUAL SAMPLE VACANCY CHROMATOGRAMS MAY BE OBTAINED. THE APPARATUS HAS BEEN DESIGNED SO THAT SAMPLE VACANCY, ELUTION AND STOPPED-FLOW REACTION CHROMATOGRAPHY CAN ALL BE APPLIED WITH NO ALTERATION. (SHORTENED)
