SEX STEROIDS AND SOFT TISSUE TUMORS. AN IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY

THE POSSIBLE DEPENDENCE OF SOFT TISSUE TUMORS ON SEX STEROIDS HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY, USING ANTIBODIES AGAINST THE ENDOGENEOUS ESTRADIOL, PROGESTERONE, TESTOSTERONE AND THE ISOENZYME OF PHOSPHOCREATINOKINASE BB CONSIDERED TO BE AN ESTROGEN INDUCED PROTEIN. THE IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL METHODS OF AVIDIN-BIOTIN(ABC) AND PEROXIDASE- ANTIPEROXIDASE (PAP), HAVE BEEN PERFORMED ON SERIAL SECTIONS OF FORMALIN- FIXED, PARAFFIN-EMBEDDED TISSUES FROM 95 MALIGNANT AND 37 BENIGN SOFT TISSUE TUMORS. SEX STEROIDS HAVEBEEN IDENTIFIED IN MOST SOFT TISSUE TUMORS AND WERE LOCALIZED IN THE CYTOPLASM OR THE NUCLEUS OF NEOPLASTIC CELLS. NUCLEAR LOCALIZATION OF ESTRADIOL WASMOST SIGNIFICANT IN LIPOSARCOMAS WHEN COMPARED WITH MALIGNANT FIBROUS HISTIOCYTOMAS AND FIBROSARCOMAS. CREATINOKINASE BB AND MM ISOENZYMES WERE ALSO COMMONLY IDENTIFIED IN THE NEOPLASTIC CELLS. THEIR PRESENCE WAS STRONGLY CORRELATED WITH SEX STEROID HORMONES. PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT CORRELATIONS WERENOTED BETWEEN CREATINOKINASE BB AND ESTRADIOL AND PROGESTERONE.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED)
