Φράγκου, ΜαρίναThe Greek diaspora is a fascinating subject of study. Migration from Greece has had a long history and xeniteia¹ has been central to the historical experience of the Greek people. It was, however, during the 20th century that the dispersion of the Greeks throughout the world covered such a wide range of destinations and was experienced by such a large number of people. Do these people form part of a diaspora? If so, what kind of a diaspora does the Greek case constitute? These issues are analyzed within the context of current theories pertaining to global diasporas and this dissertation aims to determine whether the Greek migrants form a victim or labor or trade or cultural diaspora (or a combination of the above). Research is further verified through the analysis of contemporary cultural products (literature, film, music), while transnational Greek networks are identified within the framework of a globalized world and human geography concepts.Η ενασχόληση με τον απόδημο ελληνισμό είναι αναμφισβήτητα μια συναρπαστική εμπειρία. Δημιουργεί, όμως, και πολλά ερωτηματικά: Συντέλεσαν, πράγματι, οι μεγάλες μεταναστεύσεις από την Ελλάδα κατά τη διάρκεια του εικοστού αιώνα στη δημιουργία μιας διασποράς; Αν ναι, τι είδους διασπορά είναι η ελληνική; Η παρούσα διατριβή διερευνά τις υποθέσεις αυτές με βάση την πιο πρόσφατη διεθνή τυπολογία περί διασπορών, εξετάζοντας την ιστορία της ελληνικής περίπτωσης στη σύγχρονη εποχή. Τα προαναφερόμενα ερωτήματα απαντώνται υπό το πρίσμα των διερευνήσεων για την ύπαρξη ελληνικής διασποράς θυμάτων και εργατικής, εμπορικής και πολιτισμικής διασποράς. Επιχειρείται να επαληθευτούν οι σχετικές υποθέσεις εξετάζοντας τα πολιτιστικά προϊόντα, δηλαδή την ελληνική λογοτεχνία, τον κινηματογράφο και τη μουσική. Εντοπίζονται τα σύγχρονα κοινωνικά δίκτυα της ελληνικής διασποράς, όπως έχουν διαμορφωθεί στην εποχή της παγκοσμιοποίησης.
