This thesis evaluates the scholarly impact of economics departments in Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland—using citation-based metrics. Citations, often seen as proxies for research influence, are a critical factor in academic rankings. However, traditional methods can be limited by biases and incomplete coverage of journals. This study employs a refined methodology that addresses these issues, ensuring a more equitable allocation of citation credit among faculty members and incorporating diverse publication venues. By collecting and analyzing citation data from faculty members across various institutions, this research develops a comprehensive ranking of economics departments, offering insights into individual researcher contributions and overall departmental performance. The results highlight significant variability in citation scores among departments, providing a nuanced view of research impact within the Scandinavian academic landscape. The findings contribute to broader discussions on ranking methodologies and suggest future avenues for incorporating additional metrics, such as teaching quality and interdisciplinary collaboration, for a more holistic evaluation of academic excellence.
