This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History of Macedonia, a postgraduate program of the International Hellenic University. The study deals with two great kings of the Antigonid dynasty, Antigonus Doson and Philip V, and their campaign against Caria. The selection of this topic was made with the help of my supervisor, Ioannis Xydopoulos, after we discussed my main interests concerning the history of ancient Macedonia and specifically the Hellenistic period. The chosen topic is very intriguing, because it is something that raises many questions and at the same time requires the analysis of different parameters. Moreover, it is a topic which has troubled the historians, as there is not enough data to draw any concrete conclusions. The aim of this dissertation is to shed light on these difficult points and to answer, albeit with difficulty, questions that concern and puzzle the scholars. Some of these questions are: What was the purpose of this Carian expedition for each of the two Macedonian kings? What they wanted to achieve by occupying it? How did this campaign affect the events that followed? Last but not least, I should like to warmly thank my supervisor, Ioannis Xydopoulos. First of all, he was the person who managed through his lectures at the University, when I was still an undergraduate student, to instill in me the love and enthusiasm for ancient Greek history. Secondly, I am grateful for all the assistance, guidance and support he has given me, in order to complete my dissertation. In addition, I would like to thank Nikolaos Aκamatis for his help, guidance and patience throughout the postgraduate program. This thesis is dedicated to my mother Maria for her life-long support and love and to Meletios for his constant encouragement and moral support. (EN)
