This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Studies at the International Hellenic University. Zionism is regarded as the movement connecting Jewish people with the land of their historical, cultural and religious origin: the Land of Zion. Its modern expression was deeply defined by the raging anti-Semitism in European societies, together with the parallel evolution of the “Jewish Enlightenment”, formulating the base needed for the realization of a nationalist interpretation of the Jewish identity, centered on its needed national, ethical and religious emancipation, reestablished and sovereign in its perennial homeland. The movement could not leave Greek Jewry indifferent. As such, this dissertation aims to examine the evolution of the Zionist movement inside Greek Jewish communities, together with the multiple factors (social, religious, political) affecting its course.
