This dissertation was written as part of the MA in the Classical Archaeology and Ancient History of Macedonia at the International Hellenic University. Roman presence in Macedonia begins after the dissolution of the Macedonian Kingdom in 168 BC, and was even more intense when Macedonia became a Roman province in 148 BC. Roman presence and control directly affected the once great Macedonian kingdom, in terms of public life, administration and even religion. The impact in religious life specifically can be seen in the sanctuaries where the Macedonians used to worship their gods and practice their sacred festivals. Even though some sanctuaries were abandoned after the dissolution of the kingdom many continue to be in use, and are even renovated in the first years of the Roman occupation. In most cases the deities worshipped stayed more or less the same as people continued to worship them until late antiquity. In some sanctuaries however there were some changes regarding the architecture of the sacred space and the gods that were venerated. Thanks to archaeological research of several sites in ancient Macedonia and to chance findings, such as votive reliefs and coins, a plethora of information is extracted regarding these cults which will be examined in the next chapters.
