This paper attempts to present and interpret the historical context of the Byzantine city of Arta. The historical background is outlined based on the methodology of analysis and description of the most important historical events and how they played a role in determining the course of this place in the specific time period. The study focuses on the understanding and recognition of those elements that make up the identity of the Late Byzantine period in the Balkans, analyzing the external relations and contacts between East and West.
Finally, emphasis is placed on the Byzantine Churches of the 13th century BD., which highlight the Greek tradition and the historical continuity of the region. Each of them are interwoven with the history of the place and through them the reason for the an alysis of
the historical events is given. Through the bibliographic overview, a brief record of the characteristics of the temples of the late Byzantine period is presented. The paper concludes by drawing conclusions about the centuries old history of the city, due to the importance it had in the wider region of Epirus during Byzantine times. Discovering and
uncovering the history of a place is part of the search for identity.
Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να παρουσιάσει αλλά και να ερμηνεύσει το ιστορικό πλαίσιο της βυζαντινής πόλης της Άρτας. Σκιαγραφείται το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο με βάση τη μεθοδολογία ανάλυσης και περιγραφής των σημαντικότερων ιστορικών γεγονότων και πώς έπαιξαν ρόλο στον καθορισμό της πορείας αυτού του τόπου τη συγκεκριμένη χρονική περίοδο. Η μελέτη επικεντρώνεται στην κατανόηση και αναγνώριση των στοιχείων εκείνων που συνθέτουν την ταυτότητα της Ύστερης Βυζαντινής περιόδου στα Βαλκάνια, αναλύοντας τις εξωτερικές σχέσεις και επαφές ανάμεσα σε Ανατολή και Δύση. Τέλος, δίνεται έμφαση στις Βυζαντινές Εκκλησίες του 13ου αιώνα π.Χ. οι οποίες προβάλουν την ελληνική παράδοση και την ιστορική συνέχεια της περιοχής. Καθεμιά από αυτές είναι συνυφασμένες με την ιστορία του τόπου και μέσω αυτών δίνεται η αφορμή ανάλυσης των ιστορικών γεγονότων. Μέσω της βιβλιογραφικής επισκόπησης παραθέτεται μια συνοπτική καταγραφή των χαρακτηριστικών των ναών της ύστερης βυζαντινής περιόδου. Η εργασία ολοκληρώνεται με την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων σχετικά με τη μακραίωνη ιστορία της πόλης, λόγω της σημασίας που αυτή είχε στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Ηπείρου κατά τους βυζαντινούς χρόνους. Το να ανακαλύψεις και να αποκαλύψεις την ιστορία ενός τόπου είναι μέρος της αναζήτησης της ταυτότητας.
