Fotis Kontoglou is considered one of the most important Greek artists of the 20th century. He was originally from Aivali in Asia Minor, where he left to study at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Due to financial difficulties he emigrated to France and returned to Aivali, where he was forced to leave once again due to the Asia Minor disaster. He moves to Lesvos and from there he goes to Athens as a guest of the Kazantzakis family. From there he visits various regions, such as Mount Athos where he paints icons and is influenced by the Byzantine tradition used by the monks. His works in literature and painting are influenced by Greek tradition, the Asia Minor disaster, Byzantium and modernism. He is influenced by Orthodoxy, where he uses it in his works. He has participated in many exhibitions in Greece and abroad and has 7 been awarded once by the Academy of Athens for his contribution to the arts. He married once and had a daughter. Also, in this paper, apart from his life, reference is made to his literary and artistic work, as well as a commentary on the secular works, he created throughout his life. His secular work refers mainly to portraits, such as for example the portrait of the "Stratis Duke" or the "Macedonian Gladiator". Finally, we draw conclusions about his life and work.
