In this article the author holds that a profound change must take place in the Greek universities. There is an urgent need to confine the four different academic rankings into two: namely, one introductory position of assistant professor without tenure and another one of professorship with tenure. This change might help the newly hired academic staff to free itself from any direct or indirect control which is exercised upon it through the existent continuous procedures of assessment for promotional reasons. Thus, this new academic staff, free from artificial processes of assessment, could concentrate on scientific research as well as on its effort to fulfill its academic obligations. In addition, the author comes up with some other suggestions concerning the quality improvement of the Greek universities. Aiming at increasing the academic productivity, he proposes the establishment of an excellence model for research and teaching; a similar one to this which exists in the German universities.
