Ηαυξανόμενη επιστημονικοποίηση της διαδικασίαςλήψης αποφάσεων στην άσκηση πολιτικής Υγείαςκαι η κυρίαρχη θέση της ιατρικής αυθεντίας καιεξουσίας στη σχέση γιατρού και ασθενούς απο-τέλεσαν δύο σημαντικά σημεία στα οποία επικε-ντρώθηκε η κριτική και η αμφισβήτηση των κινη-μάτων αυτών. Βασική υπόθεση εργασίας είναι ότιτα εν λόγω κινήματα αμφισβητούν την πρωτοκα-θεδρία και το «αλάθητο» της ορθόδοξης ιατρικής,η οποία βασίζεται στο βιοϊατρικό μοντέλο που κυ-ριάρχησε στις δυτικές κοινωνίες, και θέτουν μιασειρά προκλήσεων στο θεσμικό και πολιτισμικόπλαίσιο διαμόρφωσης της πολιτικής υγείας."
