During the Second World War the Greek rightwing resistance organization EDES (National Republican Greek League), under the leadership of Napoleon Zervas, suffered two military defeats at the hands of the leftist guerrillas of the Greek People’s Liberation Army (ELAS) - the first in the period from October 1943 to February 1944, and the second in December 1944. This paper sketches out the political career of Napoleon Zervas from the liberation of Greece in October 1944 to the summer of 1947. The emphasis is on his participation in the government of Dimitrios Maximos from February to August 1947, when he used his portfolio as Minister of Public Order to extract his revenge against his leftist opponents.
