Dimitrios S. Loukatos was the first Professor of Folklore at the School of Philosophy, University of Ioannina, Greece, during the period 1964-1969. Prof. Loukatos was one of the first Greek academic teachers who encouraged his students and motivated their interests to fieldwork research and, for the first time, to the ethnographic research of the material life and culture of their hometowns and village communities.
The result was a large amount of essays which included unknown information data about many aspects of Greek popular culture (especially folk songs, tales, customs etc). These essays are kept today at the Folklore Archives of the University of Ioannina. It is remarkable that among these hundreds of essays, only 93 concerned with material life and culture (dwelling, food and drink, textiles and embroideries, costumes, jewellery etc), proving that the decade of 1960 was the early beginning of academic interests on the material traditional civilization.
The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the contents of these unpublished essays, which are extremely useful to researchers and folklorists for further study and comparison with data of modem times. The general characteristics of the essays, the sources used by the students as well as some observations and remarks by Prof. Loukatos are also presented in the paper. As an Appendix the paper includes a Catalogue of all essays and a detailed Index.
