This essay deals with the alterations made by Baebius Italicus in his translation of the Homeric episode of the conflict between Paris and Menelaus (Mas book 3). In particular the present study outlines Italicus’ narrative techniques and their role in determining the techniques of characterization used by the translator. Italicus’ particular characterization of Paris, Helen and Venus in Mas Latina in relation to their Homeric models in Iliad Book 3 shows how the translator shapes not only our opinion, but also our perception of the persons involved in the episode. For instance in the case of the negative presentation of Paris Baebius Italicus is constructing an outlook on the story which is consistent with the viewpoint of an agent in the story, i.e. Hector. As for Helen’s enigmatic figure she is being transformed by the translator into a “literary palimsest”. By using the neologism Cygnei- dos, Baebius keeps his readers aware of the his sophisticated metapoetic technique, since he incorporates in this term Helen’s literary and mythological past (Homeric background) and the Roman intertexts. It is also worth noting that the contemporary political context provides a framework for understanding Venus’ portayal by Italicus. The negative qualities of the Homeric Aphrodite would be inappropriate for the Roman Venus, the progenitor of the Julio - Claudian dynasty. (EN)
